Create a DIY dried floral arrangement that will bring beauty into your home despite the lifeless winter months. Flowers may not be blooming this time of year, but dried flowers and fresh greenery are all you need to put this centerpiece together.
We’ve officially hit February where it feels like the dead of winter. By this time I’m usually missing the warmth of summer and longing for spring to come. Surprisingly, I’m actually enjoying winter this year. I’ve been able to get outside and take in the crisp, fresh air. I don’t mind needing to bundle up and bear the cold each time I step outside. So far, it’s been a lovely winter season.
The one thing I do miss, however, is the variety of fresh flowers that grow throughout the spring and summer months. I’m a lover of color, so I certainly miss the vibrance that comes with having a bouquet of fresh flowers in my home. Something I’ve been noticing, though, is how much beauty winter actually has to offer.
Here at my home we’re surrounded by Pine trees so there’s always an abundance of fresh greenery. Perfect for making a winter wreath! Over at my parent’s house there’s multiple Hydrangea bushes that have the prettiest blooms still attached. Off of my back porch there’s also a curly willow bush that has the perfect twigs to stick in arrangements. While most plants may be “dead,” they do create a lovely winter arrangement when you put them all together.
Of course this DIY dried floral arrangement is made with what I have access to. You’ll notice that I also added in some dried roses that I saved. My hope is to inspire you to get outside, find what’s in your backyard and create your own DIY dried floral arrangement! There’s always so much beauty to be found if we can slow down enough to notice.
Tips For A DIY Dried Floral Arrangement
Go to the store and buy fresh flowers to dry if you don’t have any on hand. Usually, you can find cheap bouquets on sale and they also don’t take long to try out.
Only fill the vase a quarter of the way with water, just enough for the fresh greenery to get the water it needs but little enough that the dried flowers won’t reach it.
If you’re using leaves of any kind, break them off of the stems and just lightly place them in the dried floral arrangement wherever you’d like them to sit. They won’t fall!

DIY Dried Floral Arrangement FAQs
Can I make my own dried flowers?
Yes, you certainly can! For the best results, hang flowers upside down by their stems to let them dry out. For flowers that have sturdier stems, like Hydrangeas or even roses, you can leave them in an empty vase to dry out on their own. This works for most kinds of flowers, however, they will keep shape better if you hang them to dry instead.
How do you preserve dried flowers with hairspray?
- Hang your fresh flowers upside down by the stem in a cool, dark place. Avoid direct sunlight so the colors don’t fade. Let them hang until they are completely dry, about 2-3 weeks.
- Once the flowers are fully dry, take the hairspray and spray the flowers all over so that they are completely covered. You can even do more than 1 layer if you’d like.
What is the best way to preserve flowers at home?
The best way to preserve flowers at home is through air drying in an empty vase or hanging them upside down. Make sure they are in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight so the color doesn’t fade. This is the cheapest, most natural and effective way to dry fresh flowers. Plus, they look pretty hanging there to dry!

Are dried flowers in style?
Dried flowers are one of the most popular items for home decor. You can go to almost any home decor store and notice many different styles/varieties of dried flowers for sale. They vary depending on the season yet are popular any time of the year. This is because there is no upkeep or maintenance associated with them.
DIY Dried Floral Arrangement How-To
Notice that I’ve gathered a wide variety of dried florals, but I also gathered some fresh greens to bring in some color. Definitely collect some dried Hydrangeas if you have a bush nearby. If you dried any flowers from your summer bouquets then grab those as well. Pine clippings, dried Magnolia leaves, Boxwood and Curly Willow are all excellent options for an arrangement.
To begin, I added my fresh greenery as the base. Since the opening of my vase is small I didn’t add too much to start off. You can always go back in and add more greenery as filler.
Next, I added the biggest blooms in, which was the Hydrangeas. I suggest doing this because they will take up the most room and essentially be what the arrangement is built around.
Add contrasting colors with dried summer florals if you have any. This breaks up the brown Hydrangeas or whatever dried blooms you are using. Plus, it adds a variety of texture and style to the arrangement.
Then, just keep it going! Continue to add a mix of dried florals and fresh greenery until you are satisfied with the result. Make sure you have different heights and colors throughout your DIY dried floral arrangement. Curly willow really helps to bring in height if you need it.
Trust me, you really can’t go wrong when making a DIY dried floral arrangement. Layers of different flowers, a variety of colors as well as differing heights, all work together to bring this centerpiece to life. Since this DIY dried floral arrangement is exactly that, dried, you don’t have to worry about keeping up with it. Let it grace your table as long as you’d like and may it remind you of the beauty winter brings.
