“Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful” (Colossians 4:2).
To start, prayer is something that has shaped every part of my life. If it wasn’t for prayer, my husband and I’s story of us getting together would look drastically different. Prayer is the reason I have such a wonderful community of Godly people in my life. Prayer has gotten me where I am today.
Like Colossians 4:2 says, I try to devote myself to prayer daily. Taking intentional time in the morning and throughout the day as I am doing things, to pray. Thanking God for all that I have, praising Him for who He is, and telling Him the desires of my heart and asking for them with the right heart posture. Then, like Psalm 3:5 says, wait expectantly.
To be completely honest though, I need to do better at carrying these practices into our home. A person will only embed true love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control if they invite the Holy Spirit to work in and through them on a daily basis and spend intentional time in the word. The same goes for our homes. It will only be a place of peace and rest for us if we fill it with things that glorify and honor the Lord and we invite Him into it daily.
The Proverbs 31 Woman
A perfect part of the bible that sets the tone for what a Godly women and wife should be is Proverbs 31. I have read it and studied it multiple times and each time it sets deep conviction in me. I strive to be like her, though it seems I always fall short.
“She selects wool and flax and works with eager hands” (Proverbs 31:13).
Secondly, Proverbs 31:15 states, “She gets up while it is still night and provides food for her family.”
“She sets about her work vigorously; her arms are strong for her tasks” (Proverbs 31:17).
“Charm is deceptive and beauty is fleeting, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised” (Proverbs 31:30).
“She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy” (Proverbs 31:20).
As well as Proverbs 31:25 explains, “She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.”
“She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue” (Proverbs 31:26).
These are just a few of the many verses in Proverbs 31 that stick out to me. The characteristics of the Proverbs 31 woman are worth studying and applying into your life. I am not going to sit here and tell you that I have mastered who this woman is. I’m so thankful the Lord extends grace to us because I need it desperately, especially in this area of life.
Proverbs 31 is a great passage in the Bible to use to pray for us as we go about our homemaking days. As the woman in our home, we too have a part in the way our home feels and the comfort it brings to our family and others that enter it.
Prayers for The Homemaking Wife as She Goes Throughout Her Day
A Prayer for the morning –
Dear Heavenly Father,
I come to you now thankful that I get to come to you freely and be in conversation with you. Thank you for this day You have set before me. Lord, above everything I do today, help me to have deep adoration and fear of you. I invite you to work in and through me today and I invite You into our home. Make yourself known throughout the day in whatever way that looks like. Lord, give me strength to complete the tasks that are set before me. Help me to rely on you when it feels as though I can’t go any longer. The tasks that I have in mind to do are important to me, although, what You have in store for me means even more. My ears and my heart are sensitive today to whatever you are asking of me. I love you, Lord. In Your name I pray, amen.
A prayer for your husband –
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank you for my husband. For the man that he is and the way he provides for us. I pray that you will continue to equip him with leadership skills and abilities to help with his leading of this family. Lord, I pray for the interactions he has today with the people who do not know you and follow you. Equip him with words and speak through him to those people in a way that shows them the love of Christ. Give me the strength and the wisdom to be the best helper and encourager I can be to him today. Thank you that you have brought us together. I pray that you would remain at the center of our lives individually and that that would bleed over into You being the center of our relationship. In Your name I pray, Amen.
A prayer to turn overwhelming tasks into thanksgiving –
Dear Heavenly Father,
I come to you now with a heart that is weary and tired of all of the loads of work that need done inside the house and out. Lord, help me to remember that all of this work I have really is an answer to prayer. Thank you for the loads of laundry that are full of clothes that belong to the husband which I had prayed and desired for so long. Father, thank you for the dirty dishes that were filled with food that you provided us with. As we all, thank you for this home that I have the opportunity to create into a loving and peaceful place for my family. Thank you for the dirty floors that have been trampled with happy energetic children and a hardworking husband. Your blessings are so evident even when in my eyes they might look like mess. All my life you have been so, so good. Thank You God. In Your name I pray, amen.
A prayer for the end of the day –
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank you for another beautiful day that you gave me the opportunity to be a part of. There is so much to be thankful for. You have blessed me immensely. Lord, I lift up my family and friends to you tonight. I pray that you would cover them with peace and comfort despite the trials they may be facing. Thank you for the protection of our home we have as nights get colder and for a bed to lay our heads on. Lord, help us to get a good night’s rest that we will wake up feeling refreshed tomorrow morning and ready for all that you have in store. We love you, Lord. In Your name I pray, amen.
Fixing Our Eyes On Christ
In this blog post I talk a lot about the woman in Proverbs 31. While she is a great inspiration, I want you to keep in mind that our true inspiration and who our main focus should be is Christ. Diving into the word and praying to Him, having relationship with Him, is the best thing we can do for ourselves. He deserves all of our praise and adoration.
My hope and prayer of this blog post is that it reminds you of the power of prayer. How the Lord can really do a work in and through us and in those around us if we pray and ask Him to move with the heart posture to glorify Him. Today, reflect on all the prayers He has answered in your life and give Him thanks. Then, tell Him the deepest desired of your heart and wait expectantly.
