I love apple season. Desserts with apples in them are just so good. I have fond memories of my mom and grandmother making apple crisp, apple dumplings, and apple pie. All such delicious treats. Best Ways to Serve Apple Crisp
- Ice cream – You can never go wrong with creamy vanilla ice cream. Especially when the crisp is served hot and topped with cold ice cream. The flavors and temperatures complement each other so well.
- Heavy cream – A splash of heavy cream on top of the crisp adds a bit of savoriness and creaminess to the dessert.
- Toasted pecans/walnuts – Adding toasted pecans or walnuts is the perfect addition to anything apple related. They add a nuttiness and crunch to the soft apples.
- Caramel drizzle – If you have an extra sweet tooth, this is a great one for you!
- Homemade whipped cream – One of my favorites. Something I grew up having on almost every dessert. My grandmother would whip it up in minutes. Homemade whipped cream is the perfect topping for any dessert.
- Cinnamon – No matter what topping you choose to give the apple crisp, finish it off with a dash of cinnamon. You’ll thank me later.
What are the Best Apples to Use in Apple Crisp?
The three best varieties of apples to use in apple crisp are Honeycrisp, Granny Smith, and Golden Delicious. These varieties of apples are extra crispy and even have a slight tartness to them which means they will hold up well in baking. These three kinds of apples would even do great all mixed together in the crisp. Although, while these are great varieties to use, I really don’t think you can choose the wrong kind of apple. It will be delicious with whatever kind of apple you have!

How to Make Apple Crisp Step-by-step
To start, preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. That way the crisp will be ready to pop right into the oven when we are done.

Now, to start with the recipe process, peel all of the apples, core them, and slice them into 1/4-inch slices. These thinner slices will ensure that they will bake out perfectly tender and release all their juices in the short time they are in the oven. Place the peeled, cored, and sliced apples into a medium sized mixing bowl.

To the apples in the mixing bowl, add the cinnamon, all-purpose flour, lemon juice, brown sugar, granulated sugar, and vanilla extract. Give everything a good mix until the mixture doesn’t have any dry bits of flour but rather the mixture looks shiny from all the juices. Set the apples aside to continue releasing their juices.

In another medium sized bowl, combine all of the ingredients needed to make the “crisp” topping. This includes brown sugar, granulated sugar, melted butter, all-purpose flour, rolled oats, and cinnamon. When the topping is fully mixed it should have different sized buttery clumps throughout.

Lastly, in a greased cast iron skillet or baking pan, add in the juicy apple mixture. On top of the apples, evenly sprinkle over the “crisp” topping.
Bake the apple crisp in the preheated oven for 25 – 30 minutes. The top should be a beautiful golden-brown color, and the apples should be perfectly tender.
