Oil Based Crust Recipe x2 – This crust is easy to make but more importantly perfectly flakey.
How to Make Green Tomato Pie Step-by-Step
To start, make the oil-based crust recipe and double it so you have enough for the top and bottom of the pie. Once made, place half of it in the bottom of a 9-inch pie pan. Set aside.
Now, slice the green tomato into thin slices that are about 1/4″ thickness. Do not peel the tomatoes. Pour boiling water over the tomatoes enough until they are covered and let stand for 10 minutes. Once 10 minutes is up, drain the water and put the tomatoes in the unbaked pie crust.
Now, combine sugar, flour, and spices and combine. Then add molasses and water. Give it all a good stir until fully combined and pour over the tomatoes that are in the unbaked pie crust.
Cover the tomatoes with the other pie crust and add slits into the top to give a way for steam to escape.
Bake at 425 degrees (F) for 15 minutes. Then, reduce the heat to 375 (F) and bake for 30 minutes. Let the pie cool almost completely before serving. If you serve the pie while it is still pretty warm the liquid inside will still be runny and will not have set yet.

- 1/2 cup brown sugar, light or dark
- 1/2 cup molasses
- 1/2 cup room temperature water + boiling water
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- Oil based crust recipe x2
Instructions
- To start, preheat your oven to 425 degrees (F).
- Now, make the oil-based crust recipe but double it so you can have a bottom and top to the pie. Once made, put half of the dough in the bottom of a 9" pie pan.

- After you drained the tomatoes, place them in the unbaked pie crust that you put in the pie pan.
- Combine the sugar, molasses, and spices in a bowl mixing until evenly distributed. Then, add the molasses and water to the spices mixing well.
- Pour the mixture over top of the tomatoes.
- Cover the tomatoes with the other half of the oil-based pie crust dough. Add slits in the top of the crust so the steam has a way to come out.
- Bake the pie in the 425 (F) preheated oven for 15 minutes then turn the heat down to 375 (F) and bake for 30 minutes.
- Let the pie cool to almost completely before serving. This will ensure that the liquid is set.
